About Maureen Gallagher Boland

The vision for Write to Heal Philly is one rooted in my long career as a teacher, my aspirations as a writer, and my experiences as a citizen of Philadelphia. I have taught hundreds of students and dozens of adults in this- the city of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. Time after time, I have observed how spaces that promote emotional vulnerability, active listening, and expressive language have the capacity to promote healing, well-being, and community. And certainly, we live in a city and society in need of more community and connectedness.

Why are writing workshops so powerful?

Writing workshops give individuals the opportunity to reflect on meaningful issues. Writing workshops provide a space for deep listening, allowing empathy to grow among people from different walks of life. Writing workshops give people the chance to speak from the heart. They can be a kind of antidote to the harshness of social media- a place for mindful, contemplative communication.

How have I developed the skills to work with various populations in need of the therapeutic benefits of writing workshops?

For two decades, I have used writing to work with students affected by adverse childhood experiences- the kind of trauma common in the city of Philadelphia, where inequity has led to challenges for so many of our children.

In my work as a teacher-leader, I have utilized vulnerability and compassion to deepen the discussions of sensitive issues related to identity and equity. I am comfortable listening to and affirming difficult conversations in group settings. I am comfortable with the uncomfortable, as they say, and I can teach others how to get comfortable.

In my personal journey, I have benefitted from the support of a 12-step community and other modes of healing, including participation in a writing workshop. Recovery groups taught me the power of non-judgmental listening. Writing workshops have helped me to understand how transformative it is when individuals have the time and space to develop their voices.

I look forward to working with you to provide a workshop designed for the specific needs of your community or organization.
